Participants may register by dropping off their registration forms, with payment, at Health Promotion for Faculty and Staff - 12 Varsity Gym on, or before, Friday, November 9, 12 noon.

COURSE

The Black Saturday 5K course starts behind the Holmes Convocation Center (Holmes Drive) turns right onto Hill Street then left onto Rivers Street. The course follows Rivers Street until Stadium Drive. Participants will take a left onto Stadium Drive, then right into Stadium Parking Lot. Once inside Stadium Parking Lot, participants will take the first right and follow the course onto the sidewalk between Newland Hall and Trivette Hall, which will lead all participants back onto Rivers Street, where they will take a left turn towards Rivers and Bodenheimer/Depot intersections. Participants will take a right turn onto Depot, then a right turn onto Howard Street leading them through the heart of campus and down Hardin Street (Blowing Rock or 321) all the way to Well's Fargo Bank, following the sidewalk (right) to Faculty Street, ending at Holmes Convocation Center.

THE COURSE IS CHALLENGING. THE COURSE IS HILLY WITH APPROXIMATELY OVER 200 FEET OF ELEVATION OVER THE ENTIRE COURSE.

PARKING

The gated parking lot directly behind the Holmes Convocation Center will be open to race participants starting at 6am. All cars may remain there for the entirety of the race and the awards ceremony but will need to be removed by 9:30am. All cars will be towed after 9:30am!

The race will be hand timed. All results will be posted to the website by the Monday following the race using Hy-Tek Meet Manager.

Race participants will need to remain on the sidewalk for the majority of the race. Volunteers will be on the course to point you in the right direction, but it will be your responsibility to complete the course.

Non-refundable entries. All entry fees are non-refundable and entries are non-transferable.

Pasta Dinner: $8/plate – Join us Friday, November 9, from 5 TO 8 pm at Earth Fare (178 W. King St. Boone, NC 28607) for a pre-race pasta dinner. While you are there, pick up your race materials, or if you haven't yet registered, it isn't too late to "cash" in on the early bird rate.

Registration form: Each participant must fully complete (name, address, email, emergency contact, T-shirt size, age and status) a registration form and sign the attached waiver. The parent or guardian must complete the registration form for each participant under the age of 18.

T-shirt: T-shirts are on a first come, first served basis. Sizes are not guaranteed.

Bag Checks: You can check your garments at the Registration Table the morning of the race. The bag check is only available to participants. You will record your race number on the outside of your bag using a permanent marker, and only you can collect your bag at the end of the race. All bags must be picked up by 9:15 am The Black Saturday 5K staff is not responsible for any items lost, broken or stolen. The Black Saturday 5K staff strongly discourages anyone to leave cell phones, wallets, or any other valuables inside his/her check bag.

Participant
Race Numbers: Numbers MUST be visible at all times in order for event staff to recognize you as a participant. You must have your race number on the front side of your body while running through the finish line.

Strollers, Headphones and Pets: Participants are allowed to run/walk with their strollers; however, these participants are asked to start at the back of line, at the start of the event. Participants may run with their headphones; however, it is encouraged that participants pay special attention to volunteers along the course as instructions are delivered. Participants may run/walk with their dogs; however, your pet must wear a leash at all times (before, during and after race).

Refreshments: Refreshments will be provided after the event for all participants.

Photographs: By signing the waiver on the registration form, you agree to have your photograph taken throughout the event. These photos will only be used for promotional purposes.

Course
Course: Participants are asked to run/walk on the sidewalk during the event. Volunteers will be on the course to direct you along the course, but it is your responsibility to complete the course.

Water station (course): A water station will be set up just before the 2-mile marker.

Timing: The Black Saturday 5K is hand timed. All results will be posted to the Black Saturday 5K website by Tuesday, November 13, using Hy-Tek Meet Manager system.

Awards/Prizes
Awards: Recognizing the winners of an event is important. Individual awards will be given out in Room 13A of the Holmes Convocation Center beginning at 8:45 am The awards include overall male and female, and top male and female in each of the following categories: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Faculty/Staff, Over 50, High School, and Other.

Door Prizes: Each participant is eligible to win a door prize from a local business. Door prize drawings begin at 9 am All winners must be present.

Inclement Weather Conditions
Inclement weather: Rain or shine the Black Saturday 5K will take place. If dangerous weather conditions, disaster, or act of God preclude the event, registration fees will not be refunded but will be considered as a donation to the Appalachian State University's Recreation Management Scholarship Fun. Each entrant will be able, however, to pick up his/her T-shirt at Holmes Convocation Center, Room 029.

In the event there is the possibility the 5K may be canceled due to extreme weather conditions, participants are asked to refer to the Black Saturday 5K web page, or call (828) 262-6314 for updates.
