Ten years ago former minister and director of Resort Area Ministry (RAM's Rack, etc.) of Boone was diagnosed with Huntington's Disease (HD). Huntington's Disease is an inherited disease that slowly diminishes the patient's ability to walk, think and reason. Tom's father and brother have both succumbed to this debilitating condition. In hopes of finding a cure, Tom wants people to know about Huntington's Disease and join him and his family Saturday, May 4, at the Boone Greenway Trail, as we increase awareness and raise money for research in hopes of finding an effective treatment and possible cure.

To date there are approximately 30,000 known HD cases in the United States with 250,000 Americans at risk of inheriting the disease from a parent.

Although medical research has provided HD patients with promising treatments related to their symptoms, there is yet a cure for Huntington's Disease., but with your support, together, we can make a difference.

HD is a hereditary, genetic disease that slowly causes deterioration of the brain and affects the individual's domains of cognitive skills (short-term memory, coping, organizing, and concentration), motor skills (loss of coordination, involuntary movement, fidgety behavior, and difficulties with speech, swallowing, balance, walking) and behavioral skills (irritability, depression, anxiety, aggressive outbursts, mood swings, and social withdrawal).

This disease can only be passed to another person genetically, and an individual has a 50/50 chance of inheriting the fatal disease if one of their parents is a carrier. Every person that carries the gene will eventually develop the disease.

huntington's disease society of americaThere are tests that can determine if an individual is a carrier; however, the test cannot determine when symptoms will begin. Even though there are tests available, many "at risk" individuals choose not to have the test.

It's important to remember that HD does not only affect the individual, but also their loved ones, emotionally, socially, and economically. The HDSA organization focuses on a specific symptom of Huntington's and then creates drugs and supplements that will altar and, hopefully, reduce that symptom. Tom has been an active participant in taking the latest experimental drugs throughout his diagnosis at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. There is a new research method that Tom is eagerly awaiting to try that has had a high percentage of success rates in reversing HD symptoms.
