Date: Saturday, November 17, 2018 - 9:00am
Location: Beaver College of Health Sciences, Leon Levine Hall
Proceeds of this event will go toward the Dr. James Avant Scholarship Fund.
This scholarship was created in recognition of the late Dr. James Avant's legacy, and is annually awarded to a senior in the Recreation Management department. This year, the Recreation Management Association is trying to raise $1,200.
DR. JAMES AVANT
A former Recreation Management and Physical Education professor, Dr. Avant was incredibly successful in building the recreation management program and facilitating recreation on campus for all. Before he became known as “Dr. Fun!’” a dynamic professor, who motivated and mentored hundreds of students and colleagues, Dr. Avant served as Appalachian State University’s Intramural Director and played a critical role in establishing the first campus recreation facility in the state of North Carolina ~ Quinn Recreation Center.
Having served over thirty years at Appalachian State University, spearheading growth on campus through recreation, physical education and mentorship, it seems only fitting this year’s Recreation Management Black Saturday 5K proceeds go towards the Dr. Jim Avant Endowment Scholarship Fund, which will be awarded to a deserving Recreation Management senior, in the Spring of 2019.
